Four Levels of Hospice Care

Routine Home Care

Routine Home Care is the standard level of hospice care provided (and the most common) in the patient’s home or place of residence. It focuses on managing symptoms, providing comfort, and supporting patients and families through regular visits from hospice nurses, aides, social workers, and chaplains.

Continuous Home Care

Continuous Care is a short-term, intensive level of hospice care provided to patients experiencing acute or severe symptoms that cannot be managed with routine hospice visits. This level of care is delivered in the patient’s home or place of residence, allowing patients to remain in a familiar and comfortable environment during times of increased need.

Respite Care

Respite Care is typically provided in a Medicare-approved facility, such as a skilled nursing facility or inpatient hospice setting, for up to five consecutive days. During this time, the hospice team continues to manage the patient’s care, including symptom control, medication administration, and emotional support.

General Inpatient Care

General Inpatient (GIP) Care provides short-term, intensive hospice services for patients with severe symptoms that cannot be managed at home. Care is delivered in a Medicare-approved inpatient setting and focuses on rapid symptom control and comfort.
Once symptoms are stabilized, the patient returns to their prior level of hospice care.
